Floors

This old house....

We love old homes and the character that was built into them that has lasted for over 100 years.  In the case of our kitchen and dinning room floors though, the cracks, soft spots, and nails that were starting to poke through (not to mention the choice of tiles) were adding a "character" that we were not to keen on.

So a few weekends ago, after arranging with the landlord to pay for the materials and labor, Erik took to replacing both floors.  They proved to be more difficult that anticipated and he uncovered some interesting surprises, but all in all, the improvement was well worth the effort.

This was the kitchen floor beforehand.

The layer beneath the underlayment was a true hack-job.  A piece-meal of wood, it explained why the tiles were starting to deteriorate.

Then the subfloor under that was in shambles from years of water damage.

So after ripping up three layers, Patrick (a colleague from PCMS who helped for the day) and Erik repaired a large section of the subfloor...

...put down a new "second" subfloor...

...then the underlayment, and finally the tiles.

Wren approved.  We're smiling too because we literally finished the job the same weekend she started crawling.  Good timing!  :)

The dining room floor was tackled two weeks later.

While a more straight-forward job, it did require taking up the original wood floor underneath.  A shame, really, because if it weren't for water damage (again!), we would have loved to refinished it instead.

The new underlayment.

The finished dining room floor (with a fresh coat of paint too!)

The finished kitchen floor.
Now all we need is to do is paint this room.  We aren't big fans of the dark red, but as they say...we're just renting.  :)

October Visit #3

Robb (Erik's college roommate, and RA pal from Wheaton) came to visit us this weekend.  He was involved in a wedding nearby, so we enjoyed moments with him in between his wedding festivities.  So fun to reconnect and hang out again.  Meredith was a huge fan of another guest staying with us, as always. :)

The weekend also included naps for various family members...
And, we attended the Harvest Festival at the nearby Henry Farm in Philadelphia.
Meredith had her first experience feeding goats and sheep.

Baby Ellie was tucked in and "sleeping" during the whole adventure!

Next up - pumpkin painting!

and, finally - a chance to sit on a real tractor!

October Visit #2

Our dear Seattle friends, Ted and Jane arrived on Tuesday evening and stayed through Friday morning with us last week.  We had a wonderful time together!  Jane celebrated her birthday with us during their stay - so she and Janie popped out for a thrifting date and treats at a local coffee shop. :)

Come again soon!

Eliza on the move...

Eliza is loving her mobility.  She got the hang of crawling very quickly.  This first video is just a day or two before she was off and giggling with pleasure at her accomplishment.  (Also, I love that our wee Wren can wear this polka dotted hoodie, since I have such fond memories of Meredith wearing it) :)

And now she is on the move!

the girl's room

I recently finished sewing up Meredith's duvet cover last week - just in time for the nippy weather!  It came together well, and she was thrilled to have a new blanket

And, a photo of M and E's room...

Excited girlie!

Philly Concert

We had a spontaneous adventure this past Wednesday - an evening at the Philadephia Orchestra for FREE!  The orchestra was scheduled for the opening concert at Carnegie Hall this season, but due to the union at the hall being on strike, the concert was cancelled.  So...they decided to offer a free and family-oriented concert in Philly instead.  The concert was announced 6 or 7 hours prior to the performance time and with twitter, facebook and emails going around like wild fire the hall was jam packed with fans!  We were thrilled to be a part of such an appreciative audience, and so excited to introduce our girls to the orchestra for the first time!
They played excerpts of excellent works, including Bolero, Don Giovanni and more!  Meredith was enthralled and hasn't stopped talking about it.

Friends took this family photo of us right after the performance...
...8pm and these sleepy girls are ready for bed!
